Area and Location

RARS Rajouri came into existence in year 1988 after the NARP, sub project for the mid to high altitude intermediate zone was sanctioned by the ICAR under the SKUAST-J&K. After separation of SKUAST-J&K this station came under the jurisdiction of SKUAST-J. It was established to cater to the needs of agricultural research for the development of mid to high altitude intermediate zone covering mountainous area above the outer hills including Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, Udhampur, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar and part of Kathua district with altitude range of 4500 feet to 12000 feet above mean sea level. The station is located in the town area limits of Rajouri on the Jammu Poonch Road.

The land of about 15.5 ha was acquired during 1988-89. Out of the acquired land about 8 ha is irrigated and another 8 ha is completely rainfed. However, with the establishment of Krishi Vigyan Kendra in 2004 in the same premises, the entire research farm was transferred to KVK.  At present, RARS, Rajouri has been allowed to conduct research and seed production activities at Block- A of KVK farm which has area of about 2.0 ha (40 Kanals).

*The entire area has been transferred to Krishi Vigvan Kendra, Rajouri. However, the block (A) measuring about 99.18 kanals (4.96 ha) is being used by RARS, Rajouri for research purpose.

Objectives/ Mandate of the Station:

v  Research on sustainable production technology for hill agriculture including crop improvement, resource and pest management.

v  Research for improving productivity and quality of important hill crops.

v  Development of ecologically sound and economically viable agro production and protection technologies for different growing conditions of zone.

v  Research on conservation and efficient utilization of natural resources.

v  Research on management of range and degraded lands in hills for forage production.

OBJECTIVES 

1.    To introduce the cultivar/cultivars which is/are self fertile, high yielding and having a regular bearing habit.

2.    Standardization of propagation techniques and time for pecan nut and walnut.

3.    Production of planting material of elite germplasms with an objective to increase yield production.

TECHNICAL PROGRAMME

v  Introduction of improved/promising varieties of walnut and pecan nut

v  Establishment of progeny orchard of promising varieties of walnut and Pecan nut crop at RARS.

v  Collection of pecan nut and walnut seeds for raising of rootstocks or procurement of root stocks.

v  Collection or procurement of pecan nut and walnut scions of promising varieties from Himachal Pradesh for raising high quality planting material.

v  Standardization of suitable propagation techniques and time of propagation for walnut and pecan nut.
